Know Your Drug Formulary Restrictions: Quantity Limits

Most drug formularies have restrictions and limits to certain medications. This is done to encourage physicians to use medications appropriately and save money for both you and your insurance provider.

One such restriction is quantity limits (Seen as QL on some drug formularies). This restriction limits the amount of a particular drug your plan will cover over a period of time.

For example you might be prescribed a drug that requires you take 2 tablets a day, or 60 tablets per month. If your plan has a quantity limit of 30 tablets per month, you doctor will need to contact your health insurance provider to get approval for the higher quantity. Your doctor can also consider modifications to the dosage, or select a different medication that provides the same medical benefit.
