As written by the FDA:

It is with great sadness that I announce the recent death of Patricia Delaney Klafehn, who helped create the Cancer Liaison Program in FDA's Office of Special Health Issues. She was the Associate Director for the Cancer Liaison Program and a 20 year survivor of Hodgkin's disease. Patty died of acute myelogenous leukemia on June 2, 2008 at the Washington Hospital Center.

Patty not only worked tirelessly with cancer patients, their families, and their advocates to educate them about drug development, but conducted workshops and wrote articles decoding the complex language of clinical trials and cancer treatment. She also actively influenced FDA staff to communicate more clearly about the complexity of cancer drug development and treatment, in language people affected by cancer could understand.

Patty served on interagency working groups and outside committees, always furthering an understanding of the medical complexities for patients, and the overwhelming difficulties faced by patients to medical and regulatory professionals. She was always willing to help an FDA employee work through the difficult issues surrounding a cancer diagnosis.

Patty will be missed not only at FDA, but throughout the cancer community.

Her funeral was held on Saturday, June 7th at 1:30 pm at the Church of the Annunciation, 3810 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W. in Washington, D.C.
