An effective letter begins with the correct address:
For a Representative of the House
The Honorable (First and Last Name)
United States House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515
Dear Representative (Last Name):

For a member of the Senate
The Honorable (First and Last Name)

Dear Senator (Last Name):
An effective letter is no longer than one page and includes three main paragraphs:
I. Who are you?
- Constituency
- Relationship to healthcare (e.g. patient, caregiver, provider)
- General issue of concern (e.g. Patients� Bill of Rights)
- Site bill number and title when possible
- Components you support or oppose
- How this legislation will effect you
- Request action (e.g. vote for or against)
- If in opposition, offer an alternative when possible
- GivebackIn support of your vote I am willing to�(e.g. call local newspaper)
