Penalty Exemptions
If the lowest-priced individual coverage that is available to you costs more than 8% of your gross household income, or if you are uninsured less than 3 months of the year, you may qualify for a hardship exemption from the penalty.
Other hardship exemption reasons include being homeless or experiencing a natural disaster, not being required to file taxes due to not meeting the income requirements, bankruptcy in the last 6 months, incarceration, being a documented member of an Indian tribe or as a member of a religious sect with religious objections to having insurance.
