NCI Releases New Patient Education Material

Chemotherapy and You and Radiation Therapy and You
have been updated by NCI.

With nearly half a million copies of each distributed by NCI to Cancer Centers and health professionals annually, the new formats are user-friendly. Written in plain language, they feature a larger font size and contain more white space for readability. They have also been resized for easier photocopying.

The books focus on the most common treatment side effects and ways to manage them. Each side effect has its own section describing what it is, why it occurs, ways to manage and ways to obtain more information. They can be viewed and downloaded at: cancer.gov/cancertopics/chemotherapy-and-you and cancer.gov/cancertopics/radiation-therapy-and-you.

Radiation Therapy Fact Sheet Series

This series of eleven easy-to-read Radiation Therapy sheets was designed for patients and providers alike. Written at or below the 6th grade reading level, they are helpful to emergent readers and seasoned readers. Two sheets describe radiation therapy, while nine sheets have tips to help patients manage side effects. The quotes, photographs, and questions help to make the treatment experience more personal. Practical coping techniques encourage dialogue with providers and enable people to actively participate in their care. A CD and Spanish fact sheets will also be available this Fall.

Helping Providers Help Their Patients: Using the Radiation Therapy Fact Sheets

This at-a-glance reference equips providers on effective ways to use the managing radiation side effects fact sheets with their patients in the clinical setting. In addition to offering easy ordering information, the booklet highlights ways to reinforce messages in the easy-to-read fact sheets. By following the three proven suggestions, providers can help move their patients from the thinking phase to taking actions.

The Radiation Therapy Fact Sheet Series and Helping Providers Help Their Patients can be viewed at www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/wtk/index.

Caring for the Caregiver: Support for Cancer Caregivers
is an easy-to-read booklet for caregivers of people who are being treated for cancer. It provides practical and supportive information to help the caregiver cope during this stressful time. It is a condensed version of the larger booklet, When Someone You Love Is Being Treated for Cancer, and is meant to address the needs of caregivers with lower reading levels, as well as caregivers under considerable duress who prefer to read information in short amounts. This booklet is written at the 4th-5th grade level. It can be viewed at: http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/caring-for-the-caregiver

Facing Forward: Life After Cancer Treatment

This publication has been updated and condensed since the original version in 2002. Its purpose is to educate and empower cancer survivors as they face the challenges associated with life after cancer treatment. The booklet covers post-treatment issues such as follow-up medical care, survivor wellness plans, physical and emotional changes, changes in social relationships, and workplace issues. It can be viewed at: www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/life-after-treatment.
